The 25th Annual Longest Causeway Run & Fitness Walk, held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, was another record breaking year as over 3,000 participants took advantage of mild weather and a Laguna Madre area tradition now a quarter century old. The 6.2 mile (10K) course started at the Port Isabel Community Center and ends in front of Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island. Awards ceremonies and lunch were held immediately following the race at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island. Walkers opting for the shorter 3k course were be transported by shuttle to the awards ceremony or back to the race’s starting point in Port Isabel. Trophies as well as cash prizes were awarded to the overall male and female winners. First through third place trophies were also presented in each of the 23 male and female age divisions. Cash prizes awarded for first place male and female, $1,000; second place male and female, $600; and third place male and female, $400. Top male winners were: first place,Charles Kandice (29.44.9 min.); second place, Elisha Korir (30.02.1 min.) and third place, Cherop Kibet (30.32.8 min.) Top female winners were: first place, Liza Hunter-Galvan (36.18.0 min.); second place, Nora Edith Auareza Briones (39.51.6 min.); third place, Tricia Terry (40.04.0 min.)
	On the event of the 25th anniversary of the event, the City of Port Isabel presented a Resolution to event coordinators, Betty P. Wells, (Port Isabel Chamber Director) and Shelton Coleman (Event Chair). On hand to make the presentation was Mayor Joe E. Vega, pictured with Betty P. Wells and Shelton Coleman.
