About Joe’s Oyster Bar- Port Isabel, TX
The story of Joe’s Oyster Bar began with Joe Castillo Sr., a Port Isabel native and one of 14 children. From a young age, Joe worked to help support his family, starting as a janitor at a local bakery for just $5 a week. His dedication led him to the restaurant industry, where he worked his way up to become a chef at the Sea Island Hotel on South Padre Island. In 1982, with hard-earned savings and a passion for seafood, Joe opened Gulf Seafood Market in Port Isabel — a place that offered fresh seafood daily and hot, ready-to-go plates. In 2001, the business expanded with the opening of Joe’s Oyster Bar, which quickly became a local favorite. Owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Castillo Sr., the restaurant is managed by Ricky Hernandez, who has worked alongside Joe for over 33 years. Their teamwork and commitment have created a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that keeps customers coming back. In 2016, the Castillo family, including Joe Castillo Jr. and his wife, opened a second location — Joe’s Oyster Bar & Grill in Rosenberg, TX. This expansion brought the same high standards and Gulf flavors to a new community, continuing the legacy of quality and hospitality. Joe’s Oyster Bar and Gulf Seafood Market remain rooted at 207 E Maxan St. in Port Isabel, serving the community with pride and fresh seafood every day of the week.
